The creator of Python — the language AI itself is built in — uses coding agents daily at Microsoft and likens them to an electric saw replacing a hand saw, while insisting humans keep control of architecture.

With the help of a coding agent, I feel more productive, but it’s more like having an electric saw instead of a hand saw than like having a robot that can build me a chair or a cabinet or something.
But we don’t use “vibe coding” — we stay in control where it comes to architecture and API design.
Biography
Guido van Rossum (born 1956 in the Netherlands) created Python in 1991 and shepherded it for three decades as its “Benevolent Dictator for Life.” Python became the lingua franca of machine learning — nearly every major AI system is trained and served through it — making its creator’s verdict on AI coding unusually consequential. After stints at Google and Dropbox and a brief retirement, he joined Microsoft in 2020 as a Distinguished Engineer, where he now works on memory for AI agents.
The electric saw, not the robot carpenter
Van Rossum was an early and public adopter of AI assistance: he told Lex Fridman back in 2022 that he used GitHub Copilot every day for the boring stuff, and by 2025 was describing routine work with coding agents in VS Code — feeling more productive, though he still owns the implementation, with AI mainly making it cheaper to try things and change his mind.
His enthusiasm is bounded by engineering discipline and ethics. In a 2025 ODBMS interview he called AI “over-hyped — it’s still software,” said his team avoids vibe-coding the parts that matter, and worried aloud that people without ethics or morals are being enabled to do much more damage to society with less effort. It is the posture of a toolmaker: adopt the saw, respect the blade.
