Biography
Kate Wagner is an American architecture and design critic best known for McMansion Hell, the blog she launched in 2016 that skewers the bloated, badly proportioned suburban houses of the building boom. Her criticism has appeared in The Nation, The New Republic, and other outlets, making her one of the more widely read popular voices on the built environment.
“No, AI is not disrupting architecture”
In a 2023 essay for The Nation, Wagner took direct aim at the hype around Midjourney and DALL-E renderings. She argued that what these tools generate is aesthetically conservative and “content of the lowest common denominator” — striking on a screen, but empty of the judgment architecture requires. Because AI has no body and no lived experience of space, she wrote, it cannot grasp the history, politics, or material reality of building.
Her conclusion was pointed: AI won’t truly disrupt architecture because it merely reproduces mediocrity scraped from the internet, and treating its output as the future mistakes spectacle for substance. The piece became a widely cited counterweight to breathless coverage of AI design imagery.
