Patrik Schumacher

Patrik Schumacher (born 1961 in Bonn, Germany) joined Zaha Hadid in 1988, co-authored the fluid, computationally driven style he theorized as “parametricism,” and has led Zaha Hadid Architects — one of the world’s most recognizable practices — since Hadid’s death in 2016.

AI in most projects

Speaking to Dezeen in April 2023, Schumacher revealed that “most” ZHA projects were already using text-to-image generators — DALL-E 2, Midjourney, Stable Diffusion — for early ideation, with teams generating catalogues of imaginary buildings in the studio’s signature sinewy style and carrying roughly 10 to 15 percent of outputs into 3D modelling. The firm subsequently built an in-house AI research effort and collaborated with Nvidia on AI-assisted design workflows.

In an August 2023 opinion piece he doubled down, arguing AI empowers rather than threatens ambitious architects and dismissing fears of newly enabled competition. His authorship claim — that validating, selecting, and elaborating machine output is itself creative agency — became a touchstone in the architecture-AI debate, while commenters needled that a firm famed for its style hardly needed AI “to come up with ‘Zaha’ designs.”

Schumacher is a polarizing figure independent of AI — his libertarian urbanism, including a 2016 call to privatize public space and scrap social housing, drew widespread condemnation. But on AI his position is among the most unambiguous of any major architect: a tool that extends the parametricist project he has advanced for three decades.
