You are all free to do whatever you want. So, if you just want to be an architect that draws boxes, then so be it. I will not be participating in that. I will choose to continue to understand what’s in the box.
If they are willing to spend time and money training artificial intelligence, why wouldn’t I do the same for the real thing.
Biography
Kelsey Hightower is one of the most beloved figures in cloud computing: a self-taught engineer who rose from running a computer store to Google distinguished engineer, became the public face of Kubernetes advocacy, co-authored Kubernetes: Up & Running, and created the canonical “Kubernetes the Hard Way” tutorial. He retired from Google in 2023 at the height of his influence.
Sitting out the wave
When the generative-AI gold rush began, Hightower did something almost nobody in his position does: he publicly declined to ride it, announcing on social media that generative AI was the one wave he planned to skip. In a February 2025 interview with The Register, he explained the choice — not opposition, but a refusal to evangelize a black box he has not yet decoded, preferring to invest in training humans, “the real thing.”
So we’re all getting deeper into the black box and then, over time, the black box becomes just another component in the software stack, and then we’ll all move on to the next thing…
His abstention is studied, not dismissive. He needles the hype cycle — questioning the industry’s recycled vocabulary and the proclamation of 2025 as “the year of agentic AI” — while predicting that ex-employees of the big labs will gradually demystify what is inside the models. He has even mused that AI could open programming to a new kind of developer. But unlike nearly every peer of his stature, he has attached his name to no AI product, fund, or protest.
