Biography
Mark Zuckerberg (born 1984) founded Facebook from his Harvard dorm room in 2004 and built it into Meta — the social empire of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp serving billions of people daily. After a costly detour branding the company around the metaverse in 2021, he pivoted Meta’s center of gravity to artificial intelligence.
Open weights, then a war for talent
Meta’s distinctive AI play was openness: beginning in 2023, it released the weights of its Llama models for anyone to download and build on, seeding a global open-source ecosystem and undercutting rivals’ closed APIs. When Llama 4 landed with a thud in 2025, Zuckerberg responded with checkbook shock-and-awe — a reported $14.3 billion stake in Scale AI to bring in Alexandr Wang, nine-figure offers to poach researchers, and a new division, Meta Superintelligence Labs. The spree cost him his most decorated scientist: Yann LeCun left in late 2025 as the company shifted toward closed commercial models.
In a July 2025 letter, “Personal Superintelligence,” Zuckerberg laid out his differentiated pitch: superintelligence not as a centralized engine for automating all valuable work, but as a personal tool for everyone’s goals, relationships, and growth — while conceding Meta would now be “careful about what we choose to open source.” Critics hear echoes of social media’s original promises and note the irony of the open-weights champion hedging on openness; supporters counter that no other lab even claims to want superintelligence in individual hands.
