Markiplier

Markiplier is the online handle of Mark Fischbach (born 1989), one of gaming YouTube’s defining personalities — a horror-game specialist whose channel passed thirty-five million subscribers, co-host of the Distractible podcast, and a prodigious charity fundraiser. In the 2020s he pivoted to filmmaking, writing, directing, editing, and starring in Iron Lung, an adaptation of David Szymanski’s cult submarine-horror game, made for roughly $3 million and grossing over $44 million worldwide.

A film against the dead internet

Iron Lung is more than a video-game adaptation: Fischbach framed the film around the dead-internet theory — the fear that online spaces are filling with machine-generated content and bot activity until nothing human remains — and as a statement on the pervasiveness of generative AI. Pointedly, he made it without leaning on AI generation, a handmade production from a creator whose career was built on the human side of the internet.

His stance was stress-tested in August 2025, when fans spotted an AI-generated image composited into one of his video thumbnails. Rather than deflect, Fischbach addressed it in a livestream: the image was an AI stock photo his editor had bought unknowingly — stock sites, he complained, now “intentionally bury the actual stock photos in favor of their generated slop” — and he acknowledged that artists’ furious reaction flowed from a real threat to their livelihoods, which he called incredibly valid. He said he no longer uses generative AI tools, and that AI deployed without safeguards or guardrails “is absolutely a problem.”

Fischbach’s position is a considered one rather than a reflex: he distinguishes between fearing AI and understanding precisely what about it deserves fear — unconsented training, unlabeled synthetic media, and an internet where the human signal drowns.
