Matt Biilmann

Matt (Mathias) Biilmann is a Danish software engineer who co-founded Netlify and popularised the “Jamstack” approach to building websites — decoupling the front end from back-end infrastructure. As co-founder-CEO he grew Netlify into a widely used platform for deploying and hosting web applications, positioning developer experience (DX) as the company’s guiding star for a decade.

From developer experience to agent experience

In 2025 Biilmann coined “Agent Experience” (AX): the idea that AI agents are now genuine users of software platforms, and that whether they can discover a service, call it reliably, and recover from errors matters as much as human usability. He argued that if DX had been Netlify’s North Star for ten years, AX would be its North Star for the next decade. That October, Netlify launched Agent Runners, bringing coding agents like Claude Code, Codex, and Gemini into its dashboard so they could build and update live applications — turning updates that once waited days for developer availability into minutes of agent work.

Biilmann’s framing has been influential in developer-tooling circles, prompting other platforms to think about how their APIs and docs read to a machine, not just a person. It is an unmistakably pro-AI thesis — that the next wave of software will be co-authored by autonomous agents — grounded in shipping product rather than speculation.
