Biography

Nilay Patel is a co-founder and the editor-in-chief of The Verge, host of the Decoder podcast, and a lawyer by training — a background that shows in interviews that read like depositions. He has spent the AI era pressing tech CEOs, including Sundar Pichai, on a single question: if AI summarizes everything, who pays for the web underneath it?

Google Zero

Patel coined “Google Zero” to name the endgame of AI-powered search: the day platform traffic to websites hits zero. When Google rolled out AI Overviews in May 2024, he argued it “will change or potentially even destroy the internet ecosystem as we know it,” and put the question to Pichai directly on Decoder. “If AI chatbots and AI-powered search results are summarizing everything for you, why would you go to a website? And if we all stop going to websites, what’s the incentive to put new content on the web?”

It got personal

In 2025 Superhuman (formerly Grammarly) shipped an “Expert Review” feature offering writing feedback in the voice of named experts — including Patel, who was never asked. After reporting by The Verge and others, the feature was pulled and drew a class-action suit. In March 2026 Patel put CEO Shishir Mehrotra in the Decoder chair for an episode titled “Confronting the CEO of the AI company that impersonated me,” pressing him on “the decision to launch this feature with names you didn’t have permission for.”

Patel is no reflexive Luddite — The Verge covers AI obsessively and he readily engages the technology’s builders. His critique is structural: AI companies are extracting the web’s accumulated value while starving the people who created it, a concern shared by the News/Media Alliance, which called AI previews in search “catastrophic to our traffic.”
