News/Media Alliance
News Publishers’ Trade Association
Trade association for more than 2,000 US publishers whose 2023 white paper argued that training generative AI on news content is copyright infringement, not fair use — and which ran the nationwide “Support Responsible AI” ad campaign.
In their words
AI companies and developers are not only engaging in unauthorized copying of our members’ content to train their products, but they are using it pervasively and to a greater extent than other sources.
Generative AI systems should be held responsible and accountable, just like any other business.
Biography
The News/Media Alliance, descended from the Newspaper Association of America and based in Arlington, Virginia, represents more than 2,000 news and magazine publishers in the United States. Led by president and CEO Danielle Coffey, it has become the news industry’s chief lobbying force against unlicensed AI training on journalism.
The white paper and the Copyright Office
On October 31, 2023, the Alliance published a white paper and technical study — filed alongside comments to the US Copyright Office — arguing that the pervasive copying of expressive works to train generative AI is infringement and not fair use. Its analysis found news and magazine content dramatically overrepresented in AI training datasets, from 5 to nearly 100 times its share of the generic web, and showed models can memorize and reproduce the material they trained on. Coffey testified to the Senate Judiciary Committee in January 2024 on AI and the future of journalism, and joined Senator Chuck Schumer’s AI Insight Forum.
In April 2025, hundreds of member publications ran the coordinated “Support Responsible AI” ad campaign, with headlines like “Stop AI Theft” and “Warning: AI Steals From You, Too,” urging Washington to make Big Tech pay for the content its AI products consume. The Alliance is not opposed to licensing: it advocates collective licensing markets and welcomed the Copyright Office’s 2025 report casting doubt on fair-use defenses for commercial AI training that competes with publishers.
