Adobe

Creative Software Giant

The company behind Photoshop bet its creative empire on generative AI: Firefly, trained on licensed Adobe Stock content and billed as “commercially safe,” is its answer to both the AI gold rush and the artist backlash.

In their words

Generative AI in the creative and in the art space is going to augment human ingenuity, and not replace it.
Shantanu Narayen, CNBC, 2023

Biography

Adobe, founded in 1982 and maker of Photoshop, Illustrator, and Premiere, is the company whose tools define professional creative work — which made its March 2023 launch of the Firefly generative-AI family the industry’s most consequential corporate bet. Rather than scrape the open web, Adobe trained Firefly on Adobe Stock, openly licensed content, and public-domain material, marketing it as “commercially safe” and offering enterprise customers IP indemnification.

The “ethical AI” wager

The strategy is differentiation through consent: Firefly powers Photoshop’s Generative Fill, generated billions of images within its first years, and comes stamped with Content Credentials from the Content Authenticity Initiative Adobe co-founded in 2019 to label AI-made media. CEO Shantanu Narayen has framed the whole program as a “co-pilot” for creativity, insisting AI will augment human ingenuity rather than replace it, and Adobe pays annual bonuses to the stock contributors whose work trains the models.

The creative community has not been fully persuaded. Adobe Stock contributors complained Firefly was trained on their images without opt-in consent; a vaguely worded 2024 terms-of-service update ignited fears (which Adobe denied and clarified) that customer work would feed AI training; and critics note Firefly’s later versions incorporate partner models trained on the open web, straining the “clean” branding. For working illustrators like Karla Ortiz, a subscription giant embracing generation at all felt like the landlord joining the flood.

Still, Adobe remains the reference case for a licensed, provenance-labeled, indemnified path through the AI-art wars — the corporate counterargument to both scrape-everything rivals and to the claim that generative AI is inherently theft.
