ArtCraft

ArtCraft is an open-source desktop application that calls itself “the IDE for artists” — a creative environment for interactive AI image and video generation built by StoryTold. Where most generative tools stop at a prompt box, ArtCraft treats AI output as a malleable medium: it combines 2D and 3D compositing, character posing, scene blocking, virtual actors, and asset management in one workspace, so a shot is designed before it is generated rather than gambled on afterward.

Empowering artists instead of replacing them

The project’s pitch is aimed squarely at the biggest artistic objections to generative AI: loss of control, loss of consistency, and loss of authorship. Its answer is to put the artist’s hands back on the process — placing actors into physical environments for single-location consistency, blending image layers with depth, and making results repeatable across shots. The README frames text-to-image as merely a starting point: artists “need control,” and the craft is in composing what the model renders.

Just as pointed is the distribution model. While incumbents lock AI features behind subscriptions and proprietary walls, ArtCraft is fully open source — “This is Adobe Photoshop for everyone, and we’re giving away the source code,” as the project puts it — meaning studios and individual artists can extend, modify, and adapt the tool to their own pipelines rather than rent access to it.
