AI Lab

10years oldFounded December, 2015

The lab that detonated the AI era. ChatGPT’s 2022 launch became the fastest-adopted consumer product in history, and with GPT models, DALL·E, and Sora, OpenAI sits at the center of nearly every fight in this archive — as inspiration, employer, defendant, and lightning rod.

Biography

Founded in 2015 as a nonprofit by Sam Altman, Elon Musk, Ilya Sutskever, Greg Brockman and others, OpenAI set out to ensure artificial general intelligence “benefits all of humanity.” The November 2022 release of ChatGPT turned that research lab into the fastest-growing consumer product ever launched and made generative AI a household phrase — the moment most of the battles chronicled on this site began.

The center of every battle line

OpenAI’s catalog — the GPT models, DALL·E, the Sora video generator, and its voice systems — maps almost one-to-one onto this archive’s conflicts: the Authors Guild and New York Times copyright suits over training data, the Scarlett Johansson voice dispute, the Bryan Cranston Sora 2 deepfake showdown with SAG-AFTRA, and the Hollywood letters against its lobbying for looser copyright rules. Its own governance drama — the November 2023 board crisis and its contested conversion to a for-profit structure — spawned lawsuits and defections that populate both sides of the debate.

It remains the reference point for acceleration: the Stargate data-center program measured in hundreds of billions of dollars, partnerships spanning Apple to the Pentagon, and a stated ambition to build superintelligence. Critics in this archive call it the chief extractor of creative labor; its allies call it the chief engine of the most useful technology of the century. Both are describing the same company.
