Biography
Founded in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 2022 by Michael Shulman (Mikey Shulman), Georg Kucsko, Martin Camacho, and Keenan Freyberg, Suno generates complete songs — vocals, lyrics, instrumentation — from a text prompt. Its viral 2023–24 rise made it the emblem of AI music: proof of a mass appetite for casual music-making, and the industry’s chief exhibit for what it saw as unlicensed training on recorded music.
From defendant to licensee
In June 2024 the RIAA majors — Universal, Sony, and Warner — sued Suno (alongside rival Udio) alleging mass copyright infringement in training. Suno defended training as fair use while arguing its output is transformative new music. By late 2025 the fight bent toward business: settlements and licensing arrangements with labels traded litigation for revenue sharing and consent frameworks, a template the industry now applies to AI music broadly.
The company’s framing is populist — music creation for everyone, not just the trained — a claim sharpened by CEO Shulman’s notorious remark that most people “don’t enjoy” making music the traditional way.
