Bryan Cranston

Bryan Cranston (born 1956) is an American actor best known as Walter White in Breaking Bad, a role that won him four Emmy Awards, and as the hapless dad Hal in Malcolm in the Middle. A Tony winner and Oscar nominee, he is one of the most respected working actors of his generation.

The Sora 2 showdown

When OpenAI launched its Sora 2 video app on September 30, 2025, the company said real people’s likenesses would require explicit opt-in through a “cameo” feature. Within days, AI videos of Cranston — alongside deceased figures like Michael Jackson — were circulating on the app without his consent. Cranston took the issue to SAG-AFTRA, and on October 20 the union, OpenAI, United Talent Agency, the Association of Talent Agents, and CAA issued a joint statement announcing strengthened guardrails so unauthorized generations “no longer slip through.”

All parties also endorsed the NO FAKES Act, proposed federal legislation to bar unauthorized digital replicas of a performer’s voice and likeness. The episode became the template for how the union handles AI likeness abuse — its newly elected president Sean Astin cited the Cranston case as proof the union could move fast — and it was resolved not with a lawsuit but with a negotiated fix.

Cranston’s stance is targeted rather than absolutist: he thanked OpenAI for correcting course and framed the fight around consent and control, not around banning the technology.
