Sean Astin

Sean Astin (born 1971), son of actors Patty Duke and John Astin, has been a beloved screen presence since childhood — Mikey in The Goonies, the title underdog in Rudy, and Samwise Gamgee in The Lord of the Rings. On September 12, 2025, he was elected president of SAG-AFTRA, the union representing more than 150,000 performers, on a platform centered on confronting AI.

Tilly Norwood and the AI fight

Weeks into his term, the AI-generated “actress” Tilly Norwood — created by the studio Particle6, whose founders claimed talent agencies wanted to sign her — ignited an industry firestorm. Astin answered that the story was “not the first shoe to drop,” pointing to the AI protections won in the 2023 strike led by his predecessor Fran Drescher, and the union declared flatly that Norwood is not a person but a construct built from performers’ uncompensated work.

In the same period Astin helped resolve the Sora 2 deepfake episode involving Bryan Cranston, joining OpenAI and the major talent agencies in a pact to strengthen likeness guardrails and back the NO FAKES Act. In interviews he has called AI “an absolute threat” to actors while emphasizing that the union’s job is to meet the technology with enforceable consent and compensation rules rather than panic.

Astin’s posture is institutional rather than personal: he speaks less about his own likeness than about the journeyman members — background actors, voice performers — most exposed to replacement by synthetic performers.
