Fran Drescher

Fran Drescher (born 1957) is an American actor best known as the creator and star of the 1990s sitcom The Nanny. Elected president of SAG-AFTRA in 2021, she went from sitcom royalty to the face of Hollywood labor’s confrontation with artificial intelligence.

The 2023 strike

On July 13, 2023, Drescher announced the first actors’ strike against film and TV studios in 43 years — joining striking writers in the industry’s biggest shutdown in decades. AI was at its core: the union said studios had proposed scanning background actors for a single day’s pay and using their digital likenesses “forever,” without further consent or compensation. Drescher’s fiery announcement speech — “we are all going to be in jeopardy of being replaced by machines and big business” — went instantly viral and framed the strike as labor’s stand against an existential technology.

The strike lasted 118 days, ending in November 2023 with a contract establishing consent and compensation requirements for digital replicas — the first AI guardrails in a major entertainment labor agreement. Drescher called the deal a billion-dollar-plus win, though some members, including AI hardliners like Justine Bateman, argued the protections did not go far enough.

Drescher continued to press AI as the defining issue for performers through the end of her presidency in 2025, when Sean Astin succeeded her — inheriting a fight that had moved from contract language to viral deepfakes.
