In her words
In the end, folks, it’s the humans who do the innovating and the entertaining.
As an entertainment innovator, I am very, very busy innovating. So I did what any other innovator worth her salt would do: I turned to ChatGPT-4.
Biography
Julia Louis-Dreyfus (born 1961) is the most Emmy-decorated performer in television history, winning eleven acting Emmys across Seinfeld, The New Adventures of Old Christine, and Veep. A Saturday Night Live alumna and recipient of the Mark Twain Prize, she has folded her AI skepticism into both union activism and her comedy.
Strike votes and a sabotaged speech
In May 2023, Louis-Dreyfus appeared alongside Jean Smart and Kumail Nanjiani in a SAG-AFTRA video urging members to authorize a strike — “I’m asking you to join me in voting ‘yes’ on the strike authorization” — with curbs on AI replacing actors among the union’s core demands. The strike that followed won the first contractual consent-and-compensation rules for digital replicas of performers.
That November, accepting the entertainment honor at the WSJ Magazine Innovator Awards, she let the technology indict itself: she had ChatGPT write her speech, and read the results aloud. The bot addressed the room as “fellow investors,” credited her with Erin Brockovich and Mystic Pizza — Julia Roberts films — and called Richard Dreyfuss her grandfather. Her human-written closer: “In the end, folks, it’s the humans who do the innovating and the entertaining.”
The bit traveled widely because it made an argument no op-ed could: a live demonstration, in front of tech and media elites, that the tools being pitched as replacements for entertainers could not yet reliably distinguish one famous Julia from another.
