Biography
Devin is the flagship product of Cognition, the applied AI lab founded in 2023 by IOI gold medalists Scott Wu, Steven Hao, and Walden Yan. Unveiled in March 2024 as “the first AI software engineer,” Devin works like a teammate rather than an autocomplete: given a ticket, it plans, browses documentation, writes code in its own shell and editor, runs tests, fixes its errors, and opens the pull request.
The lightning rod of agentic coding
The launch demo detonated the “will AI replace programmers” debate in a way no chatbot had — and drew a matching backlash when reviewers showed the marketing outran the product, most famously a viral takedown of its demo claims.
