Peter Singer

Peter Singer (born 1946) is an Australian moral philosopher, professor emeritus of bioethics at Princeton, and arguably the most influential living ethicist. Animal Liberation (1975) launched the modern animal-rights movement, and his arguments about charitable giving seeded effective altruism. Where many public intellectuals of his generation treat generative AI as a menace, Singer has treated it as a new medium for philosophy itself.

The philosopher becomes a chatbot

In 2024 Singer launched Peter Singer AI, a chatbot trained on his decades of writing and designed to hold Socratic ethical dialogues in his voice. Announcing it in July 2024, he framed the project as an experiment in whether a philosophical persona could scale: by that December it had fielded tens of thousands of messages from users in some 100 countries. He even sat for a formal “interview” with his own bot, published in the Cambridge Quarterly of Healthcare Ethics in 2025, probing its answers on sentience and moral status.

Singer’s engagement with AI runs deeper than self-replication. With researcher Tse Yip Fai he has argued that AI ethics must extend to the technology’s impact on nonhuman animals, and he takes seriously the question of whether future AI systems could themselves be sentient — in which case, by his own utilitarian logic, their interests would count. Critics have called the chatbot a gimmick that flattens philosophy into autocomplete; Singer’s reply is characteristically practical — if it prompts more people to reason carefully about ethics, it does good.
