Biography
Rana el Kaliouby (born 1978 in Cairo) earned her PhD at Cambridge building systems that read human facial expressions, then brought the work to the MIT Media Lab. In 2009 she and Rosalind Picard spun the research out as Affectiva, the startup that defined the category of “Emotion AI” — software that detects human emotional states, used in automotive safety and media analytics. She became CEO in 2016 and steered the company to its 2021 acquisition by Sweden’s Smart Eye.
From building AI to funding it
El Kaliouby told her story in the 2020 memoir Girl Decoded, chronicling a journey from a conservative upbringing in Egypt to running an American AI company — and her mission to “humanize technology before it dehumanizes us.” In 2024 she co-founded Blue Tulip Ventures, a fund investing in what she defines as human-centric AI: “AI that’s good for people, good for the planet, is ethical, and is built with diverse teams.”
Her advocacy blends enthusiasm with insistence on responsibility: she argues the technology is in its earliest days, that its builders bear responsibility for its effects, and that consumers “vote with our wallet” on which AI futures get built. She remains one of the most prominent voices arguing that machines with emotional intelligence will make AI more humane, not less.
