Ray Kurzweil

Ray Kurzweil (born 1948) earned his reputation as an inventor before he earned it as a prophet: he built the first omni-font optical character recognition system, the first CCD flatbed scanner, the Kurzweil Reading Machine for the blind, and a line of music synthesizers admired by Stevie Wonder. He received the National Medal of Technology in 1999 and has worked on machine learning at Google since 2012.

Forty years of saying this would happen

Kurzweil’s 2005 bestseller The Singularity Is Near predicted AI would reach human-level intelligence by 2029 and merge with humanity by 2045 — dates he has refused to move for two decades. In his 2024 sequel, The Singularity Is Nearer: When We Merge with AI, he argues the generative-AI boom has vindicated the timeline; if anything, he told interviewers, the Turing test will probably fall sooner than his prediction.

In a June 2024 Guardian interview he laid out the rest of the vision: nanobots in our capillaries linking brains to the cloud, “longevity escape velocity” in the early 2030s where medicine gives back more years than aging takes, and universal basic income to absorb labor disruption. He frames none of this as a threat — the merger, in his telling, deepens rather than diminishes what humans are.

Critics have long dismissed his timelines as techno-religion, and even AI optimists wince at the precision of his dates. But his core prediction — that machine intelligence would rise on an exponential curve while experts scoffed — has aged far better than his critics expected, which is why every AGI debate still starts by arguing with Ray Kurzweil.
