Rishi Sunak

Rishi Sunak (born 1980) served as prime minister of the United Kingdom from October 2022 to July 2024, after careers at Goldman Sachs and in hedge funds. More than any other head of government of his era, he made frontier AI a personal signature issue — casting Britain as the natural broker between Silicon Valley acceleration and global safety concerns.

Bletchley Park and the safety institute

In a speech on October 26, 2023, Sunak laid out his doctrine: acknowledge frankly that AI brings real risks — even citing extreme scenarios — while refusing to legislate prematurely, arguing it is impossible to write sensible laws for a technology not yet understood. Days later he convened the AI Safety Summit at Bletchley Park (November 1–2, 2023), where 28 governments including the United States and China signed the Bletchley Declaration on frontier-AI risk. He also founded the UK AI Safety Institute, the world’s first state body dedicated to testing frontier models, and closed the summit with a livestreamed conversation with Elon Musk.

From regulator-in-chief to adviser

In October 2025, Sunak — still a sitting MP — became a senior adviser to both Microsoft and Anthropic, advising on macroeconomic and geopolitical trends. The appointments watchdog Acoba flagged “a reasonable concern” that the roles could be seen to offer unfair access and influence, given the live debate over AI regulation; Sunak committed to donating the earnings to his numeracy charity, The Richmond Project. Critics saw a revolving door; supporters saw the logical continuation of a politician who had always believed the technology’s upside outweighed its dangers.
