In her words

I think we’re at a place now where real people are so filtered, so photoshopped, that there is no actual differentiation between 3D art and a photo.

Biography

Shudu (persona name Shudu Gram) is a hyperrealistic digital model created in April 2017 by Cameron-James Wilson, a former British fashion photographer who taught himself 3D modelling from online tutorials. She went viral after Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty reposted an image of her, and Wilson has billed her as “the world’s first digital supermodel.”

An all-digital agency

Wilson founded The Diigitals, described as the world’s first all-digital modelling agency, which now represents Shudu alongside other virtual models. He frames the technology as a creative collaborator rather than a replacement and stresses that audiences should know a character is artificial.

I think it’s important to know who’s behind each character because you could end up supporting someone whose views are vastly different than your own.
WERSM, 2018

Because Shudu is depicted as a Black woman but was created by a white man, the project drew sustained criticism — accusations of “digital blackface” and of profiting from a Black image without a Black creator. Wilson has acknowledged the critique, saying he cares deeply about how the work is received and understands it can be read negatively.
