Angela Collier

Angela Collier is a theoretical physicist and a popular science communicator whose YouTube channel explains physics — and skewers scientific hype — to an audience of hundreds of thousands. She is one of the more mordant voices arguing that the current wave of “artificial intelligence” is more branding than substance.

“AI does not exist”

Her 2023 essay-video “AI does not exist but it will ruin everything anyway” makes a deliberately provocative case: that “AI” is a marketing label stretched over ordinary statistical machine learning, and that the tools do not do what laypeople imagine they do. Her worry is that it barely matters — because executives, investors and institutions believe the label, they make consequential decisions on the strength of it: selling AI art, building scams, and firing workers in favour of systems that then fail to deliver.

As a physicist, Collier is especially scathing about people trusting generative models for reference and research, warning that fluent output carries no guarantee of fidelity to the facts. Her critique is aimed less at the mathematics than at the credulity and money swirling around it — a hype-first culture she sees corroding trust in real expertise.
