Biography
Spencer Kimball co-created the GIMP — the open-source image editor — as a Berkeley undergraduate in the mid-1990s with Peter Mattis, then spent years at Google before the pair founded Cockroach Labs in 2015. Its flagship product, CockroachDB, is a distributed SQL database engineered to survive failures (hence the name) and scale horizontally across regions.
Databases for the agentic era
Kimball has become one of the more vivid AI-infrastructure evangelists, arguing that the explosion of AI agents will demand a corresponding explosion of databases — far too many to administer by hand. He compares the shift to the disappearance of assembly programming: agents will increasingly write and operate software, and human engineers will work at the level of designs, specifications, and guarantees rather than lines of code.
A lot of people don’t even know what’s within their code base anymore, like they only know the designs, specifications and guarantees.
He is not naïve about the risks. Kimball notes that enterprises are not eager to “turn over the keys to production” and treats agents as a second pair of eyes rather than an autonomous authority. His pitch is that resilient, self-managing databases like CockroachDB become essential precisely because the agent-driven workloads coming will operate at 10x — even 100x — today’s scale.
