Ted Sarandos

Co-CEO of Netflix

Netflix co-CEO who argues AI’s real opportunity is making movies “10 percent better,” not just cheaper — and who shipped the first generative-AI final footage in a Netflix original.

In his words

I remain convinced that there’s an even bigger opportunity if you can make movies 10 percent better.
Netflix Q1 earnings call — Deadline, 2025

Biography

Ted Sarandos (born 1964) rose from Arizona video-store clerk to co-CEO of Netflix, where he built the streaming era’s dominant content machine and greenlit the company’s push into original film and television. As the executive who upended Hollywood’s distribution model once already, his read on AI carries unusual weight in the industry.

Better, not just cheaper

Sarandos staked out his position at Netflix’s April 2025 earnings call, responding to James Cameron’s suggestion that AI could halve production costs: the bigger prize, he argued, is quality — AI-assisted set references, pre-visualization, VFX prep, and shot planning that make films better, not merely cheaper. He had road-tested the same formula in 2024, telling Deadline the goal was making content “10% better,” not “50% cheaper.”

He put footage behind the talk. On Netflix’s July 2025 earnings call, Sarandos announced that the Argentine series El Eternauta contained the first generative-AI final footage to appear in a Netflix original — a building-collapse shot completed roughly ten times faster than traditional VFX would have allowed, by a show that could not otherwise have afforded the sequence.

Critics note that Sarandos has an obvious commercial stake in normalizing AI production, and his comments landed while memories of the 2023 strikes — fought partly over AI — were still raw. But his consistent framing has been that AI serves storytellers: he insists creative talent, not automation, remains the scarce resource, and that Netflix deploys the tools with, not around, its filmmakers.
