Sam Register

Sam Register is President of Warner Bros. Animation and Cartoon Network Studios, one of the most powerful executives in American television animation. Over two decades he has shepherded or developed a long list of series — from “Teen Titans” and “Ben 10” to “Teen Titans Go!” and DC animated projects — overseeing hundreds of artists across the Warner and Cartoon Network pipelines.

A skeptic in the executive suite

Speaking in a 2024 Los Angeles Times roundtable, Register offered a notably cautious view for a studio head amid an industry rush to generative tools. He argued that animation is fundamentally a visual medium and that, to date, AI had shown him nothing a human artist did not do better. More pointedly, he cast the studio’s role as protective: safeguarding artists and the art form, and preserving entry-level jobs so newcomers can gain the experience the craft requires.

Register’s position matters because it comes from inside the boardroom rather than the picket line. Where voices like Hayao Miyazaki denounce AI on artistic and moral grounds, Register makes a managerial case — that the technology is not yet good enough to justify displacing the people and pipeline that produce quality animation. As with any executive, his commitments will be judged over time against his studio’s actual practices, but his on-record skepticism is a meaningful data point.
