Andrew Sean Greer

Andrew Sean Greer (born 1970) is the San Francisco–based novelist whose comic masterpiece Less — the odyssey of a failing writer fleeing his ex’s wedding — won the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, a rare honor for a funny book; he followed it with Less Is Lost in 2022. Earlier novels include The Confessions of Max Tivoli and The Story of a Marriage.

Plaintiff against Meta

In December 2023 Greer joined Richard Kadrey, Sarah Silverman, Ta-Nehisi Coates, and other writers as a named plaintiff in Kadrey v. Meta. The complaint alleges Meta downloaded millions of pirated books via BitTorrent from shadow libraries like LibGen, Z-Library, and Anna’s Archive to train Llama — the court record showed at least 666 copies of the thirteen plaintiffs’ own books among them — after internal licensing discussions were abandoned because piracy was faster and free.

In June 2025 Judge Vince Chhabria granted Meta summary judgment, finding the plaintiffs had not built a record of market harm — while insisting the ruling “does not stand for the proposition that Meta’s use of copyrighted materials to train its language models is lawful,” only that “these plaintiffs made the wrong arguments.” Greer, who has not otherwise campaigned publicly against AI, let the filing itself register his objection: that a novel a decade in the making is not free training data.
