Arnold Schwarzenegger
Actor and Former Governor of California
Bodybuilding champion, Terminator star and two-term Republican governor of California who treats AI as the inevitable arrival of a future his most famous films imagined — fascinated and wary in equal measure, taking neither side.
In his words
Now over the course of decades, it has become a reality. So it’s not any more fantasy or kind of futuristic. It is here today.
Biography
Arnold Schwarzenegger (born 1947) rose from Austrian bodybuilding champion to one of Hollywood’s biggest action stars — most enduringly as the killer cyborg of James Cameron’s Terminator films — before serving two terms as the Republican governor of California (2003–2011).
The Terminator “has become a reality”
Speaking at an event in Los Angeles in June 2023, Schwarzenegger reflected that the self-aware machines of The Terminator were no longer science fiction. He credited James Cameron’s “extraordinary writing” for anticipating a world now arriving, and acknowledged the public anxiety around it — but framed the technology as a fact to be reckoned with rather than resisted.
In this movie, in Terminator, we talk about the machines becoming self-aware and they take over… Today, everyone is frightened of it, of where this is gonna go.
Schwarzenegger’s posture is characteristic of the man: he names the danger without recoiling from it. A lifelong techno-optimist who has poured energy into climate innovation and infrastructure, he casts AI as another powerful force humanity will have to learn to steer — a nuanced middle position between the doomers and the boosters.
