Ben Affleck

Ben Affleck (born 1972) won his first Oscar at 25 for co-writing Good Will Hunting and his second as producer of Best Picture winner Argo (2012), which he also directed. In 2022 he co-founded Artists Equity with Matt Damon, a studio built on giving film artists ownership stakes in their work.

The “craftsman at best” argument

Speaking at CNBC’s Delivering Alpha summit in November 2024, Affleck delivered one of the most-shared industry takes on generative AI. Movies, he argued, “will be one of the last things, if everything gets replaced, to be replaced by AI.” His reasoning: large models work like apprentice craftsmen, “cross-pollinating things that exist” — capable of imitation but not of the taste that makes art.

Crucially, Affleck was not dismissing the technology. He predicted AI would substantially reduce the cost and drudgery of filmmaking — particularly in visual effects, where he acknowledged jobs would be disrupted — and said it would “lower the barrier to entry,” letting more people make movies. That framing places him among Hollywood’s pragmatic adopters: bullish on AI as a tool, skeptical of it as an author.

The clip went viral, drawing praise from technologists for its clear-eyed description of how models actually work, and pushback from VFX workers who noted that “disruption” lands on their desks first — the same tension animating critics like Justine Bateman.
