Casey Newton (born 1980) covered Silicon Valley for The Verge — where his investigations into Facebook’s content moderators won awards — before going independent in 2020 with Platformer, one of the defining one-person tech publications. Fake-and-sucks vs. real-and-dangerous

His December 5, 2024 essay “The phony comforts of AI skepticism” sorted the debate into two camps: external critics who insist AI is “fake and sucks,” and internal critics who believe it is “real and dangerous.” Newton planted his flag in the second, arguing that dismissing the technology as a bubble was a form of comfort-seeking that left readers unprepared for systems whose capabilities keep rising.

The piece detonated on impact. Gary Marcus accused Newton of caricaturing the skeptics; Ed Zitron answered with “The Phony Comforts of AI Optimism,” casting Newton as a hype-launderer. Newton’s rejoinder was that the strongest reason to criticize AI companies is precisely that “they might actually succeed in what they are trying to build.”

That stance — take capabilities seriously, cover harms seriously, refuse the comfort of dismissal — has made him a reference point for how working journalists metabolize each new model release, safety scare, and industry melodrama.
