Biography
Sir David Attenborough (born 1926) is the defining voice of natural-history broadcasting, from Life on Earth (1979) through Planet Earth and Blue Planet. Across more than seventy years at the BBC, his narration became a global signifier of trustworthiness — which is exactly what made it worth cloning.
“My identity is being stolen”
In November 2024, BBC researchers found websites offering AI clones of Attenborough’s voice, and YouTube news channels using synthetic “Attenborough” narration on reports about the Russia-Ukraine war and Donald Trump — topics he never lent his voice to. In a BBC segment, an AI recreation played beside a genuine recording was nearly indistinguishable.
The then-98-year-old responded with a statement of unusual force for a figure who rarely wades into technology debates: having spent a lifetime trying to speak the truth, he said, he was “profoundly disturbed” that his identity was being stolen and used “to say whatever they wish.”
His case became a touchstone in the voice-cloning debate precisely because the harm is not commercial displacement but credibility laundering: strapping a trusted voice onto untrusted claims. It parallels the misuse Morgan Freeman and Scarlett Johansson have fought over their own voices.
