Claire Silver

Claire Silver is the pseudonym of an American artist who has collaborated with AI since 2018, blending classical painting styles, collage, and mythology with generative tools. Working anonymously, she rose through the NFT world to institutional legitimacy: her work has been auctioned at Sotheby’s London alongside Damien Hirst and Banksy, shown at Christie’s New York, and acquired for the permanent collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

Taste is the new skill

Silver’s story is inseparable from disability. She has described being hit with a life-changing chronic illness that forced her to relearn how to walk and talk — and AI as the tool that swept away the physical barrier of technical skill. On the TED AI Show in 2024 she said the illness “felt like wasted potential that was meant to be thrown away, but it’s become something beautiful.” Her coined maxim, “taste is the new skill,” has become a slogan for a generation of AI-native artists: when a machine can execute, what matters is the quality of the questions you ask it.

Unlike most figures in the AI-art fight, Silver refuses the pundit role — her about page states flatly that she makes no statements on whether AI is good or bad, comparing herself to “a caveman painting fire.” She has still acknowledged the wider stakes, saying she has no fears about the future of AI in art, but does have fears about the future of AI.

Her stance puts her on the opposite shore from illustrators like Karla Ortiz who see generative models as engines of theft. Silver’s counter-example is her own biography: a disabled, self-taught outsider for whom the machines were the only door into an art world that venerates hand skill.
