David “Rez” Graham

Game AI Programmer

A veteran game AI programmer and author who, from inside the discipline, used a GDC 2025 talk to warn that generative AI threatens “the death of art” — arguing the technology is purely derivative and should uplift artists, not replace them.

In his words

I’m worried about the death of art. That’s what I’m concerned about.

AI is entirely derivative. By definition it’s derivative.

Biography

David “Rez” Graham is a longtime video game AI programmer and author, with credits across studios including Electronic Arts and a body of writing on game AI development. His expertise is specifically in artificial intelligence for games — the behavior systems that make characters and worlds feel alive — which lends unusual authority to his skepticism about generative AI.

“The death of art”

At the 2025 Game Developers Conference, Graham used his platform to warn colleagues about generative AI’s creative cost. His central fear was not primarily lost jobs but what he called the death of art: because generative models are, by his account, entirely derivative, an industry that leans on them risks producing ever less genuine innovation. He argued that creatives are valued for their ingenuity and problem-solving, not for rote execution, and that corporations reaching for AI to cut costs would end up with blander games.

Coming from an AI practitioner rather than an outsider, Graham’s message — “I want to uplift our art community, I don’t want to replace them” — carried particular resonance at GDC, where developer sentiment toward generative AI has been souring year over year. His talk framed the choice not as tech-versus-art but as which future the industry chooses to build with the tools it has.
