Hideo Kojima

Hideo Kojima (born 1963) is gaming’s most famous auteur: creator of the Metal Gear series, which practically invented the cinematic stealth game, and — after a bitter 2015 split from Konami — founder of the independent Kojima Productions, maker of Death Stranding and its 2025 sequel. Movie-obsessed and relentlessly experimental, he has spent four decades chasing technology that lets games do things they could not do before.

AI as a friend, not a rival

AI, for Kojima, is the next such technology. In an October 2025 interview with Wired Japan, he described treating AI as a friend and co-creator rather than an idea vending machine — one he would assign the tedious, expensive parts of development such as animation and NPC behavior, freeing human creators to lead. He has framed his ambition as staying a step ahead of the technology by creating together with it rather than being displaced by it.

The stance comes with characteristic nuance. Kojima has repeatedly distinguished between AI as collaborator and AI as substitute, insisting that creative direction, authorship, and intent must remain human — the “lazy” prompt-to-product shortcut holds no interest for a director famous for obsessing over every camera angle. His enthusiasm is about capacity: smaller teams reaching further, and audacious ideas surviving the budget spreadsheet.

In an industry where AI remains a flashpoint — and where peers like Hayao Miyazaki have become icons of resistance — Kojima’s embrace is notable precisely because nobody doubts his artistic credentials.
