Debbie Harry

Debbie Harry (born 1945 in Miami, raised in New Jersey) fronted Blondie from New York’s CBGB scene to global stardom, gliding between punk, disco and — on 1981’s “Rapture” — the first rap vocal to top the Billboard Hot 100. Fifty years into a career built on absorbing whatever new sound arrived, she has met the AI era with conspicuous calm.

Oh my god, AI! What will we do?

Asked about the technology in a September 2025 Los Angeles Times interview, Harry mimicked the industry’s hand-wringing — “So everybody’s saying, ‘Oh my god, AI! What will we do?’” — and compared the moment to the cassette and CD transitions the business survived before. She has heard algorithm-built songs and found them “kind of boring,” and the AI-generated pictures of herself circulating online don’t fool her for a second.

Her theory of why she is safe is aesthetic rather than legal: creativity, she argues, runs on soul and on productive mistakes — “if you do stuff that’s mistakes or wrong, that becomes the best art of all” — which is precisely what optimization-driven systems don’t do. Still, she concedes the machines may get there: somewhere along the line, she expects, “somebody will come up with an AI piece of music or artwork that is stunning.”

Unlike many of her generation’s stars, Harry has neither joined the protest letters nor licensed her voice or likeness to AI ventures — no lawsuits, no partnerships, just an unbothered verdict from someone who has outlived every disruption since vinyl.
