Her voice, one of pop’s most powerful, is exactly the kind of asset the AI-cloning debate is about.

Opting in to the voice-clone experiment

In November 2023 Lovato became one of nine artists — alongside John Legend and Charlie Puth — to license an AI clone of her singing voice to Dream Track, YouTube’s pilot powered by Google DeepMind’s Lyria model. US creators could type a prompt, pick a participating artist, and get a 30-second AI-generated song — lyrics, backing track, and vocal — in that artist’s voice for use in Shorts.

Her launch statement framed participation as a matter of agency: with AI reshaping the industry regardless, she argued artists should claim a role in steering it. It was a notable position at a moment when much of the music world was mobilizing the other way — within months, hundreds of artists signed open letters warning against AI voice cloning, while Lovato had already chosen the licensed, consent-based route.
