Donald Glover

Donald Glover (born 1983) is an American polymath — writer on 30 Rock, star of Community, creator and star of the Emmy-winning series Atlanta, and a Grammy-winning musician under the name Childish Gambino. Few figures in entertainment move as fluidly between comedy, prestige television, film, and music.

Gilga and Google Veo

In May 2024, Google unveiled its Veo generative-video model at Google I/O alongside a short documentary showing Glover and his creative studio Gilga using the tool on a farm-studio shoot. Glover said he had been interested in AI for years and had approached Google himself. The partnership was a centerpiece of Google’s effort to win over artists skeptical of AI — Forbes framed the campaign, which also featured Wyclef Jean, as an explicit charm offensive toward creative communities.

Glover’s pitch for the technology was democratic rather than defensive: if generative video lowers the cost of making images, then everyone becomes a potential director, and storytelling — not tooling — returns to the center. It was a striking public position at a moment when much of Hollywood, fresh off the 2023 strikes, treated video generation as an existential threat.

Critics of the partnership noted that a demo film produced with Google is marketing as much as testimony, and the finished Gilga–Veo work has stayed largely out of public view. But Glover’s stance is consistent with his career-long pattern: adopting new distribution and production forms early, on his own terms.
