Dua Lipa

Dua Lipa (born 1995), the London-born daughter of Kosovar-Albanian parents, became one of the defining pop stars of her generation with Dua Lipa (2017) and Future Nostalgia (2020), winning three Grammys and racking up tens of billions of streams. Beyond music she runs the Service95 media platform and its book club, positioning herself as one of pop’s more literary-minded figures.

Signing against the exemption

In February 2025 she signed the open letter in The Times — alongside Ed Sheeran, Elton John and Sting — arguing that the UK government’s plan to let AI firms train on copyrighted work unless creators opt out would “represent a wholesale giveaway of rights and income from the UK creative sectors to big tech.”

In May 2025, with a Data (Use and Access) Bill vote looming, she was among the 400-plus artists — with Paul McCartney, Coldplay and Elton John — who wrote to Prime Minister Keir Starmer urging him to back Baroness Beeban Kidron’s amendment putting transparency at the heart of the copyright regime, so that creators could see when their work was used and negotiate licenses.

Lipa has not given extended personal interviews about AI; her stance is expressed through the coalition letters she signs. Those letters notably do not seek to ban AI — they demand disclosure and licensing, framing UK creative work as an asset that should be paid for rather than scraped.
