The Moana deepfake he said yes to

In August 2025, reporting revealed that Disney’s live-action Moana remake had planned to use AI firm Metaphysic to layer a deepfake of Johnson’s face onto his real-life cousin and longtime stunt double, Tanoai Reed — a scheme Johnson himself approved to cut down his days on set. Disney lawyers scrapped it after 18 months of negotiations, worried the studio could not claim copyright over AI-generated frames. In a June 2026 Esquire profile Johnson was candid about where he stands: he had just tried ChatGPT, fed it his diet and training goals, and marveled that “within three seconds” it returned a program he called “lights-out, pencils-down spectacular.”

The clones he didn’t authorize

Johnson has spent years swatting down impersonators — warning fans on Instagram as far back as 2018 to “be vigilant, be smart, question it, report it” about fake accounts begging for money. The AI era industrialized the problem: fact-checkers have debunked deepfaked Johnson videos hawking get-rich-quick schemes and “health spending card” ponzis built on his cloned voice, and in April 2026 his wife Lauren Hashian publicly laughed off AI-fabricated photos of the couple cradling a newborn. Like Tom Hanks, he treats the scams and the technology as separate questions — consent being the line.
