Biography

Emad Mostaque (born 1983 in Jordan, raised in Bangladesh and Britain) studied mathematics and computer science at Oxford and spent over a decade as a hedge-fund manager before founding Stability AI in 2020. In August 2022 the company funded and released Stable Diffusion — an image generator developed with academic researchers at LMU Munich and the startup Runway — as open-source software anyone could run, modify, and build on.

Open models, open warfare

That release detonated the AI-art wars. Under the banner “AI by the people, for the people,” Mostaque argued open models would democratize a technology otherwise controlled by a few corporations. Artists saw it differently: Stable Diffusion was trained on billions of scraped images, and Stability was sued in 2023 both by Getty Images and by a class of artists including Karla Ortiz. Mostaque’s own positions could whiplash — he signed the Future of Life Institute’s 2023 pause letter even while shipping open models, and told Fortune the worst case for AI was genuinely catastrophic even as he raced ahead.

His tenure unraveled through 2023–24: a Forbes investigation documented a history of exaggerated claims, key researchers departed, and investors pressed for change. He resigned as CEO in March 2024, declaring on X that “the concentration of power in AI is bad for us all” and that you cannot beat centralized AI with more centralized AI. He has since pursued decentralized-AI ventures.
