Biography
Greg Rutkowski is a Polish digital artist known for painterly, golden-lit fantasy scenes — dragons, battles, and castles rendered in a classical style — created for Dungeons & Dragons, Magic: The Gathering, Sony’s Horizon Forbidden West, and Ubisoft’s Anno series. In 2022 he became, involuntarily, one of the most consequential names in AI.
The most prompted artist alive
When Stable Diffusion launched, users discovered that appending “Greg Rutkowski” to a prompt reliably produced epic fantasy in his style. Within a month his name had been used as a prompt some 93,000 times — against roughly 2,000 for Michelangelo, Picasso, or Leonardo da Vinci — making him, as MIT Technology Review reported in September 2022, the artist AI art could not stop imitating. Rutkowski had never been asked; his work was in the training data via scraped portfolio sites.
His fear — that searches for his name would surface floods of machine-made imitations instead of his own paintings — quickly came true. He asked to be excluded from training datasets, and Stability AI’s Stable Diffusion 2.0 did strip out many artist styles. But in 2023, community developers released an add-on model specifically to restore his style, prompting Futurism’s memorable headline that AI enthusiasts had put him “back in” after he begged to be removed.
Rutkowski became a touchstone case for the artists’ movement — cited in advocacy by Karla Ortiz and others — precisely because his harm needs no legal theory to grasp: a living, working illustrator whose own name now summons his competition.
