Biography
Ice Cube (born O’Shea Jackson, 1969, in Los Angeles) wrote much of N.W.A’s epochal Straight Outta Compton before a solo run that made him one of hip-hop’s defining voices, then built a second career as actor and filmmaker (Boyz n the Hood, the Friday franchise) and founded the BIG3 basketball league.
“Demonic”
In May 2023, weeks after the AI-generated track “Heart on My Sleeve” faked the voices of Drake and The Weeknd, Ice Cube was asked about AI music on the Full Send podcast. His answer became one of the bluntest artist statements of the whole debate: AI is “demonic,” a backlash from “organic people” is coming, and he doesn’t want to hear an AI Drake song.

His framing is notable for being economic as much as spiritual: he analogized voice cloning to sampling, a practice hip-hop litigated into a licensing economy decades ago — nobody gets to use your voice, he argued, “without having to pay.” Coming from an artist whose own genre was built on repurposing records, the sampling comparison cuts in both directions, and critics of his position have pointed that out.
