James Earl Jones
Actor & Voice of Darth Vader
The iconic voice of Darth Vader and Mufasa who, in 2022, signed over rights for AI firm Respeecher to recreate his Vader voice from archival recordings — ensuring the character would outlive his retirement, and eventually him.
In his words
James Earl felt that the voice of Darth Vader was inseparable from the story of Star Wars, and he always wanted fans of all ages to continue to experience it.
Biography
James Earl Jones (1931–2024) overcame a childhood stutter to become the most celebrated voice in American entertainment — Darth Vader in Star Wars (1977), Mufasa in The Lion King, and an EGOT-honored stage and screen career spanning seven decades.
Signing Vader over to the machines
When Lucasfilm needed Vader for the 2022 Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi, the 91-year-old Jones signed off on having Ukrainian AI startup Respeecher synthesize the character’s voice from archival recordings of his younger performances. Skywalker Sound supervising editor Matthew Wood told Vanity Fair that Jones — who had spoken of winding down the character — guided the AI-assisted performance like “a benevolent godfather.” It was one of the first high-profile, fully consented AI voice recreations in Hollywood.
After his death in September 2024, his family continued the arrangement: in 2025 they authorized Epic Games to launch a conversational AI Darth Vader in Fortnite, built on his voice. Players promptly coaxed the character into profanity, and SAG-AFTRA filed a labor charge over the feature — a reminder that even consented voice AI generates new disputes about who bargains for synthetic performances.
Voice actors remain split on the precedent. Some see Jones’s deal as the dignified model — consent, compensation, artistic oversight; others, echoing concerns raised by groups like National Association of Voice Actors, worry that every legend who licenses a legacy voice shrinks the room for living performers to inherit such roles.
