Biography
James Patterson (b. 1947) is by most measures the best-selling living novelist on Earth, with hundreds of millions of copies sold across the Alex Cross, Women’s Murder Club and Maximum Ride franchises — many produced with co-writers in a studio model that itself anticipated industrialized storytelling. A former advertising executive, he is also one of publishing’s biggest philanthropists for literacy and independent bookstores.
Consent, compensation — and readers
In July 2023, Patterson was among the most prominent names on the The Authors Guild open letter to the CEOs of OpenAI, Alphabet, Meta, Stability AI, IBM and Microsoft, which demanded that AI companies obtain permission for training on copyrighted books and compensate writers for past and ongoing use — “endless meals for which there has been no bill,” as the letter put it.
Patterson laid out his own view in a February 2025 Substack post titled “Me, Myself and A.I.” He is unbothered by the prospect of machines out-writing novelists, finding AI fiction competent but bland. His real worry inverts the usual fear: not that AI will replace writers, but “that A.I. is going to decimate the next generation of readers” — and he predicts books written by real people will become more important than ever.
