Biography
Karl Bode is an American technology and telecom journalist who has covered the industry for more than two decades, first at DSLReports and Techdirt and later as a widely-published freelancer for outlets including Vice, The Verge, and Wired. He is known for a skeptical, consumer-protection sensibility and a low tolerance for corporate spin.
AI as a cost-cutting cudgel
Bode’s AI criticism is less about the models themselves than about how management deploys them. He has documented the rash of newsroom experiments gone wrong — CNET’s undisclosed, error-riddled AI articles; MSN’s false headlines; the plagiarism farms filling the web with machine-generated garbage — and argues these are not teething problems but the predictable result of using AI to justify layoffs and gut editorial standards.
Notably, Bode is not a blanket denier: he grants that AI has “useful applications in journalism ranging from digging through court records to editing and transcription.” His indictment is aimed at the executives who, in his telling, reach for the technology as a way to spend less on human reporting rather than to do it better.
