Keanu Reeves

Keanu Reeves (born 1964) is a Canadian actor whose roles as Neo in The Matrix and the title assassin in John Wick made him an action icon — and, unusually for Hollywood, a beloved one. The Matrix, about machines simulating reality for captive humans, gives his AI-era warnings a certain resonance.

The no-manipulation clause

In a February 2023 Wired interview ahead of John Wick: Chapter 4, Reeves revealed that every contract he signs contains a clause forbidding digital manipulation of his performance without consent. The rule dates to an early experience — “early on, in the early 2000s, or it might have been the ’90s,” he told Wired, “I had a performance changed. They added a tear to my face” — an edit made without his participation that prompted the protection.

Reeves called the prospect of deepfaked performance “scary,” framing it as a loss of the actor’s agency and point of view, and worried about the cultural drift it signals — audiences, he noted, may simply stop caring what is real. He described corporations’ interest in owning identity and performance as part of “a system of control and manipulation.” His contract-first defense predates the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike and parallels the litigation-flavored stance of Robert Downey Jr..

Reeves is not anti-technology in general — he has spoken with curiosity about digital worlds and starred in the Cyberpunk 2077 game — but on synthetic performance his line has been consistent for two decades: nothing goes on his face without his say.
