Copyrighting a face

In a September 2023 interview with The Daily Telegraph, given as the SAG-AFTRA strike put digital replicas at the center of Hollywood’s labor fight, Knightley said performers were then focused on protecting voice-over work through negotiation, but predicted the fight would soon reach the face itself: “I imagine you’re right, the next step will be to copyright my face.” She called AI’s potential “catastrophic” and said she hoped governments would step in and regulate it.

Her remarks landed as commentators noted the awkward legal truth behind them: in most jurisdictions you cannot actually copyright a face, leaving performers to rely on a patchwork of publicity and image rights that generative AI is testing hard. That gap — between how completely a model can capture a likeness and how thinly the law protects it — was precisely her point.

Knightley has kept acting steadily (Black Doves, Boston Strangler) and has not made AI a recurring campaign; her warning stands as a snapshot of mainstream acting talent realizing, mid-strike, that identity itself had become contested property.
