Kurzgesagt — In a Nutshell is the Munich animation studio founded in 2013 by Philipp Dettmer, whose flat-design birds and meticulously researched scripts on everything from immunology to black holes built one of the largest science channels on YouTube, with more than twenty million subscribers and versions in multiple languages.

Declaring war on slop

In October 2025 the studio published “AI Slop Is Killing Our Channel,” a video-essay-as-manifesto arguing that cheap AI-generated content was poisoning the information ecosystem it depends on. The team described testing AI research assistance and finding that a significant share of what came back was unsourced, fabricated material — some of it citing AI-generated articles “masquerading as science or news sources” — a feedback loop they argued threatens every fact-based creator, since slop channels can out-publish human teams hundreds of videos to one.

The video ended with a pledge: Kurzgesagt’s research, writing, and signature illustration would remain human work, with AI relegated to trivial utility tasks — “AI is a helpful tool, but the creativity and integrity is still ours,” the narration allowed, comparing acceptable use to an align tool in Illustrator. Even the studio’s calendar was advertised as “human-made — no AI slop included.” The stand made Kurzgesagt one of the most prominent channels to formalize a no-generative-AI editorial policy, alongside debunkers like Ann Reardon fighting the same flood from the food-content side.

The position is targeted rather than absolute: Kurzgesagt objects to AI-generated content displacing researched, human-crafted work and corrupting the sources everyone relies on — not to machine learning as a scientific field, which its own videos have covered with characteristic curiosity.
