Biography
MoboReels is a vertical microdrama app published by Changdu (HK) Technology Limited, one of the wave of Asian-owned platforms that took the one-minute-episode format to US phones from 2023 onward. It licenses and commissions soapy serials — romance, revenge, werewolves, billionaires — and sells them episode by episode, in a US market Business Insider valued at about $1.4 billion.
Remaking its own shows without the cast
MoboReels is the platform where the practice became visible. Ashley BeLoat starred in its 2025 series “Hate the Way I Love You”; months later a series with the same plot appeared on the same app, led by an AI-generated actor who was younger and glossier but moved as BeLoat had and spoke in a voice that sounded like hers. Brittany Marsicek’s MoboReels show “Ex-Husband, Step Aside, Lady Boss Returns” was reissued the same way. Neither was told, asked, or paid.
BeLoat asked the app, through her manager, either to take the AI version down or to compensate her. As of Business Insider’s July 2026 report she had received no response, and the company made no comment for the story. Its own store listing, meanwhile, advertises both the AI it is happy to name and a licensing promise that reads differently after the fact.

The mechanism that made it possible was contractual rather than technical: microdrama work is largely nonunion, and the standard deal grants the producer broad editing rights that nobody read as permission to replace the performer. Rivals ReelShort and GoodShort faced versions of the same complaint in 2026; GoodShort answered, MoboReels did not.
